About the class:
This class will be centred around American modern dance techniques and nuances of the Paul Taylor style. The back and pelvis will be used as motor engines revving the body throughout space. We will pay close attention to grounding sensations, head/tail connectivity, powerful usages of contraction and release, and embodied birding patterns. Additionally, we will consider the dynamics of flow, muscularity, and architectural designs of the dancer’s form. The class will begin with an etherealized, free-movement warmup and will follow with a rigorous physicality that promotes athleticism throughout.
Hank Bamberger is a conceptual artist, experimental choreographer, artistic director, and movement educator with over fifteen years of experience in the dance world. His training includes theatre, musical theatre, improvisation, dance pedagogy, and choreographic composition with specialisations in modern, jazz, contemporary, ballet, and improvisation. Bamberger earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) with a concentration in modern dance from Marymount Manhattan College (2009) and holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in dance and choreography from Sarah Lawrence College (2020). He danced with the Paul Taylor II Dance Company from 2010 to 2015 and then went to serve as the Artistic Director of the West End Academy of Dance in Richmond, VA. Since 2018, he has been an active dance maker creating work within his own alternative-improvisatory dance company, Bamberger Dance Projects. He has worked with the United Nations, Design Pavilion NYC, Azimut Yachts, and Global Fashion Exchange (GFX) for ocean sustainability and Earth Day in New York, NY.
In 2019, he was selected as an Emerging Choreographer by the Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning’s 10th Annual Making Moves Dance Festival. Bamberger has worked with choreographer David Grenke, taught for the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance in New York City, and worked extensively last year as the Ballet and Composition Specialist at the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School in Richmond, VA (USA). Queer theory, phenomenology, and projections of mess and excess pervade his unconventional performance designs and avant-garde dance constructions. Bamberger’s work upholds feminist and hetero-divergent activisms that blur lines between performance art, movement research, and dance. His choreographies utilize irony, absurdity, camp, erotism, surrealism, dystopian theatre, gallows humour, and dichotomies of the sublime and grotesque. Today, he continues to teach and choreograph as an independent freelance artist while living in Birmingham, UK where he is pursuing his PhD in choreographic practice-as-research at Coventry University’s C-DaRE Program.
