Thursday morning Pro Class with Laura Vanhulle!
Laura Vanhulle (Artistic Director, Vanhulle Dance Theatre) has a background mainly in Cunningham, which she uses as a baseline for her highly physical classes. She combines her strength as an ex-gymnast with the grounding and core of African Dance, the fluidity and circularity of Kathak, and the fluidity and floor from flying low to create a fluid strength-based movement class. In her philosophy of dance she uses a lot of her yoga practice and believes that the breath and directing with the intention of the mind are key to the movement she creates.
Originally from Belgium, Laura started training in rhythmic gymnastics at a very young age. She studied at Northern School of Contemporary Dance, where she achieved a BA (Hons) in Contemporary Dance. Laura has worked with Ace Dance and Music, Shobana Jeyasingh, Coda Dance, Keneish Dance, Motionhouse, Rutherford Dance Company, Room 2 Manoeuvre, Aakash Odedra, RoguePlay, Southpaw Dance Company, Companhia de Dança de Matosinhos and The Van-L Dance Company in Hong Kong.
Laura continues to work closely with Sonia Sabri Company and Autin Dance Theatre. She received funding from Arts Council England for her first R&D in 2013, and then in 2014 set up her own dance company, Vanhulle Dance Theatre, for which she created a full production ‘Angles In Life’, and a short film that toured nationally and internationally, on which she collaborated with Mickael Marso Riviere and Nicolas Vladyslav.
In 2016, Lighthouse commissioned ‘Echo’, which toured nationally and Internationally, and Laura was then invited to the International Choreography Festival in Hong Kong to create ‘Infinite Womanhood’.
Laura was recently funded by Arts Council England for company development for Vanhulle Dance Theatre and her next production ‘Yin’, and she was selected for the 20 Days for 20 Years Artist Residency at Déda. She has worked with Gary Clarke on a Sky Arts commission, ‘This is an Island’, and is also currently working on ‘Same Same…But Different’ with Sonia Sabri.
