As a development of BDN’s ChoreoMatch, we invite applications from Midlands-based artists interested in working with community groups. BDN will commission two choreographers, each to work with a local community dance group. The choreographer will work with the group to create a short piece (7–15 mins) to be performed at Introducing… on 13th July 2019 at TouchBase Pears. The choreographer will be sensitive to the needs of the group while exploring their own artistic development. The choreographer will work with dancers who have not trained in a formal setting, and will need to outline their approach to process within the application.

We are interested in receiving applications suitable for a relaxed studio theatre setting as well as unconventional, gallery or outdoor spaces. The BDN team are consulting with Sense and TouchBase Pears to make the performance accessible to people with a range of different needs.

About the group:

b-Vague are a newly formed group who are seeking a performance opportunity. When we asked them what they were looking for in this project, they told us: ‘As a diverse LGBTQ dance group of up to twelve non-professionals, we are seeking a queer-friendly choreographer who is open to creative discussion but will ultimately take the lead. We are interested in focusing on one dance style, as a foundation, and building on this using other styles and creative mediums to effect an emotional shift in our audience.’ For more information on the group please download the information pack above.

About the venue:
TouchBase Pears is ‘a pioneering, multi-purpose centre for the whole community in Birmingham and beyond – a place that brings people together in a welcoming environment where everyone can feel connected, included and part of the community’. The venue has a studio theatre space, as well as a number of other accessible sites that could be used for performances. BDN are in conversations with TouchBase Pears about how best to make this event fully accessible and inclusive.
