In Partnership with BDN and One Dance UK, Researchers at Coventry University’s Centre of Dance Research (C-DaRe) are looking for up to 20 Midlands-based freelance dance artists to take part in a focus group hosted by C-DaRe on 27th April 2022 at Coventry University.

This focus group will be exploring current working practices and employment relationships experienced by dance freelancers and will provide room to interrogate how existing policy is affecting the economic sustainability of freelancers in the dance and wider cultural sector.

This will be an opportunity for artists to share their experiences and will provide the space for imaginative, honest and solution-focussed discussions of the wider issues affecting career sustainability for freelancers.

We are inviting freelancers from a range of working contexts to participate in these focus groups, aiming for the commercial and subsidised sectors and a range of dance styles and career stages to be represented.

The 20 artists will each be offered £170 for their time to participate in the focus groups on the day as well as their travel and any personal access costs being covered. Lunch will be provided.

How To Apply

If you are interested in participating in this or future focus groups please complete the following questionnaire by Monday 4th April:

We will choose the 20 Midlands-based artists for this initial focus group on a first come first served basis from among those representing different contexts and backgrounds in dance. We will be in touch with those we are able to invite by 8th April.

Please do share this call for focus group participants with any Midlands-based freelance dance artists you think would be interested in participating and able to share valuable insights into current working conditions in the dance sector.
