“Introducing… proved the most interesting evening of the three weeks.”

Birmingham Dance Network are super thrilled to have our summer projects reviewed in this month’s Dancing Times – Britain’s Leading Dance Monthly.

Introducing… our regional platform for new work was held at Vivid Projects on 9th June 2018 as part of Birmingham International Dance Festival. This was a vibrant night, full of varied, thoughtful and imaginative work from the region and beyond.
This is what Dancing Times writer and critic David Mead had to say…

“Dance artists from the Midlands were strongly in evidence, with two events arranged by Birmingham Dance Network (BDN), an artist-led organisation doing much good work in the city. Their Introducing…, at Vivid Projects, an atmospheric converted warehouse space deep in the old industrial heartland of Digbeth, proved the most interesting evening of the three weeks.”

Alongside Introducing… Birmingham Dance Network commissioned guest choreographer Mehdi Farajpour, all the way from Paris, to work with a selected pool of female dancers from the region as part the BDN ChoreoMatch programme. The work in progress, Soundgraphy, was premiered at Introducing…

“Produced as part of BDN’s Choreomatch programme, Soundgraphy saw Paris-based Mehdi Farajpour experiment with movement determine accompaniment, thanks to sensors worn by the performers. The technology requires precise angular movement, and that was what we got. The intensity of local dancers Shelley Eva Haden, Claire Lambert and Laura Vanhulle was impressive, their striking costumes of silver chain-mail-like headdresses emphasising their femaleness, in contract to the male-only traditions of Ta’zieh, the ancient Iranian practice that part inspired the work.”

Introducing… wasn’t the only event we hosted this summer, we also had SalonBHAM! kicking off just a few days later on 13th June 2018, which also got a mention in the Dancing Times!

“BDN also hosted a well-attended day of workshops and thought provoking discussions at mac.”
